Post Office Freak is a website dedicated to documenting our nation’s post offices. We achieve this in a number of ways.
- First, we create an article for every building we visit. We publish and share this on our website: www.postofficefreak.com.
- Second, we share our work and inspire others through social media like our Facebook page, Twitter feed, Google Plus and Instagram page.
- Third, we are a research associate and contributor to The Living New Deal.
Who is behind this site?
David Gates is the primary freak and author behind Post Office Freak dot com. He has been visiting and photographing post offices since early 2000.
It started while he was on vacation in northern Wisconsin.
We drove through the small town of Athelstane, WI while on our way to a white water rafting trip and saw the local post office building. I think we all commented how much it resembled a two car garage. We we’re all amused and decided to take our picture in front of the building.
During this same road trip we ended up stopping to take our picture in front of several other small-town post office buildings including Pembine, and Amberg. As the saying goes, “the rest is history”. I’m hooked and have been photographing and documenting post office buildings ever since.
After discovering there are buildings which have artwork, history and artifacts, he has taken the time to record his work in more detail. In the past David’s method was just driving around and taking pictures of as many buildings as time would permit. Today his road trips are more focused on visiting each building which houses or housed New Deal artwork.
Now that he has amassed a collection of photos and stories, he has decided to share his work with all who are interested.
What’s the story behind the name?
Several people have commented or have said amusing things when they observe me photographing post office buildings. Take for instance when I was in Florida, I had a lady make the following comment:
“is this the best thing you can find (referring to the post office I was photographing) to remind you of Florida”?
Yet there are also the numerous times I’ve received inquisitive stares when I’m in the bushes photographing the corner stone. or holding my tripod way above my head so I can get those detailed pictures you see in my articles.
It occurred to me all these people must think of me as some kind of freak. Which I fully embrace and decided it would make for a great title for this website.
Upon further analysis of the word “freak”, the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word freak as: an ardent enthusiast or a person who is obsessed with something.
It is this definition that describes David the best and one of the reasons for the title of this website. The word freak also causes laughter from people when they ask for the name of his website or read the title on his business card. Are you smiling or laughing yet?
What else does David do?
Believe it or not David does have another life outside of his post office work. Although if you ask his wife and family they may laugh and disagree.
David also maintains a personal blog, foodie blog and travel blog. They include all the other interesting stuff he is working on that doesn’t quite fit into this freakish little post office site. David currently lives in Crystal Lake, Illinois with his lovely wife, son, and two cats.
Until next time, get out there and visit a post office. Or better yet send a letter or post card. And if you want our mailing address please head over to our contact page.
